Australian Citizenship by Conferral is a pathway for individuals who meet specific residency and eligibility requirements to become Australian citizens. This process allows permanent residents and certain other individuals, like eligible New Zealand citizens, to apply for and gain Australian citizenship.

    • The right to vote.

    • Eligibility to work in the Australian Public Service or Defence Force.

General Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Residency Requirements:

    • Be a permanent resident for at least 12 months.

    • Have lawfully resided in Australia for the past 4 years.

    • Have spent no more than 1 year outside Australia in the last 4 years, and no more than 90 days outside Australia in the last 12 months.

  2. Connection to Australia:

    • Likely to reside in Australia or maintain a close and continuing connection with the country.

  3. Good Character (for applicants aged 18 or older):

    • Demonstrated by providing information about overseas travel and any legal history.

  4. Eligibility for New Zealand Citizens:

    • Certain exemptions apply, such as being in Australia on 26 February 2001 with a Special Category Visa (SCV) or meeting specific residency requirements before that date.

 

Application Process

Stage 1: Consultation

Stage 3: Citizenship Appointment and Test

  • Applicants attend an appointment with the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) to present original documents.

  • Eligible adults take a citizenship test that covers:

    • Rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

    • Australian history, culture, and values.

    • Study material is provided in the Australian citizenship test resource book.

 

Stage 4: Citizenship Ceremony

  • Approved applicants attend a citizenship ceremony, typically within 3 months of approval, to take the Australian Citizenship Pledge. This is the final step to becoming an Australian citizen.
