The Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) is designed for young adults who wish to travel and work in Australia, with the aim of promoting cultural exchange. This visa allows stays of up to 12 months per visa, and it is available in three stages: the first, second, and third Working Holiday visas.

Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) is an excellent opportunity for young adults to explore Australia while working to support their travels. Below is a concise summary of the key points for the first, second, and third Working Holiday visas.

First Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)

  • Eligibility:

    • Must be outside Australia to apply.

    • Cannot have held a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462).

    • Valid passport from an eligible country.

    • Age: 18–30 (inclusive); 18–35 for Italy, UK, Ireland, France, Canada citizens.

    • Be a genuine visitor and have sufficient funds for their stay.

    • No dependent children during the stay.

  • Duration: 12 months.

 

Second Working Holiday Visa

  • Eligibility:

    • Must comply with all conditions of the first visa.

    • Age requirements remain the same as the first visa.

    • Completion of 3 months (88 days) of specified work in regional Australia while on the first visa.

  • Specified Work:

    • Includes roles in plant and animal cultivation, mining, construction, and bushfire recovery work (examples provided above).

    • Work must align with defined ANZSIC industry classifications.

 

Third Working Holiday Visa

  • Eligibility:

    • Must have held 2 subclass 417 visas previously.

    • Age requirements remain the same as the earlier visas.

    • Completion of 6 months of specified work while on the second visa or relevant bridging visa.

  • Specified Work:

    • Same categories as the second visa, but for a longer period (six calendar months).

 

Additional Information

  1. Specified Work Details:

    • For both the second and third visas, eligible work must reflect full-time hours over the designated calendar days.

    • Examples of eligible work:

      • Picking fruit, herding cattle, reforestation, bushfire recovery, or COVID-19 healthcare work.

    • Examples of ineligible work:

      • Nannying, wine tastings, secondary processing (e.g., wine-making), and general administration.

  2. Duration: Each visa allows a 12-month stay, with the potential to extend up to 36 months if all criteria are met.

  3. Eligible Countries:

Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (BNO holders), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK.
